This Is Going to Be Awesome!
Colossians 3:4 says, “When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” The Lord’s return is going to be awesome!
This verse shows why you should “set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ,” as Peter said in 1 Peter 1:13. On that day, on judgment day, you who believe will appear with Christ in glory! You will be judged as a forgiven and holy child of God because Christ’s righteousness is counted as yours through faith in Him.
I love how Paul doesn’t just start by saying, “When Christ appears,” but he slips in the added comfort of describing Christ as the one “who is our life.” And he doesn’t just say “then you also will appear in glory,” but he slips in the added comfort of noting with whom we will appear—with Christ!
The life of our souls is so wrapped up in what Jesus did for us and who He is, that Jesus actually IS our life. The life we have in eternity is so characterized by continuous fellowship with Jesus that our appearance in glory is an appearance WITH HIM.
We need to take a moment and rest in the comfort and hope that God gives us through a verse like this. It’s from that place of resting in Gospel comfort that we become rightly concerned with godly living and love for our neighbors. In light of God’s love for us, how should we love others? In light of Christ’s soon return, how should we live?
With the comforting Gospel foundation laid in the second chapter and here in the first part of the third chapter of Colossians, Paul goes on in chapter three to give clear instructions for how to live in light of who we are in Christ. Read it!
Take comfort in the return of the Lord. It’s going to be an awesome day. Rest in Christ, and love your neighbor.
