God Uses the Bible to Shine the Light of Christ into our Hearts
"When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand... the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God" (Exodus 34:29). The next verse tells us, "When Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him." What an amazing sight! The glory of God transformed the face of Moses.
The Bible tells us that Moses went up the mountain into the presence of God multiple times to speak with God. Each time Moses came down from the presence of God his face was shining like the sun. When Moses spoke to the people they beheld the radiant face of Moses and they knew God had spoken to him.
Moses' face was transformed whenever he came into the presence of God. Moses met with God on the mountain. We meet with God through His Word and through receiving Him in His body and blood. Imagine if our own faces began to shine during church services and personal devotions. But God is doing an even more glorious work in us! God is shining the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ into our hearts (2 Corinthians 4:6). The Bible says, "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit" (2 Corinthians 3:18). The Scriptures call us to "be transformed by the renewal of your mind so you may discern what the will of God is, what is good and acceptable, and perfect" (Romans 12). The presence of God changed Moses. His presence changes all those who trust in Jesus. He changes our hearts and our minds. On the last day our bodies will also be changed, for we like Moses will behold Jesus face-to-face in His glory.
When Moses came down the mountain with his shining face, he called the frightened people to come to him to hear the Word of God. Today I call you to come to church to hear God's holy Word. Why? For your good. Moses spoke the glorious Word of God that brought condemnation to sinners. The glory of the Gospel of Jesus is even more glorious. Jesus brings sinners from death to life. As the Bible says, "For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory" (2 Corinthians 3). God desires to save us, to change us, to transform us through the Good News of Jesus. When we receive God's Word, treasure it, and dwell upon it God does far more than transform our skin. He transforms our hearts and minds. He fits us for eternal life. Come and hear. Jesus is for you and your household.
